2nd PETER HOARE MEMORIAL LECTURE. Worthington G Smith: his haunts and relics

Synopsis

Worthington G Smith: his haunts and relics Abstract: The spring of 1859 saw the triumphant emergence of geological (later Palaeolithic) archaeology. Depending on your place in Victorian society, handaxes and other Palaeolithic artefacts represented a new science, a new hobby, or a new source of income. In this talk I’ll explore how Worthington George Smith (1835–1917), a prominent member of a group of Victorian amateurs, came to make a significant contribution to the development of British Palaeolithic archaeology.
