Monday 17 October 2022 –Claire Harris Monday 17 October 2022 - Claire Harris Synopsis Worthington G Smith: his haunts and relics Abstract: The spring of 1859 saw the triumphant emergence of geological (later Palaeolithic) archaeology. Depending on your place in Victorian society, handaxes and other Palaeolithic artefacts represented a new science, a new hobby, or a new source of income. In this talk I’ll explore how Worthington George Smith (1835–1917), a prominent member of a group of Victorian amateurs, came to make a significant contribution to the development of British Palaeolithic archaeology.Bio Claire Harris Claire is a Palaeolithic and community archaeologist, with particular expertise in the Palaeolithic of Britain and northern Europe. She has a background of working in the museum, heritage and academic sectors and has a long history of developing and delivering heritage learning and community engagement activities. |
